Three and a half years ago, CS2's files said "bear trap." Valve still hasn't said a word.

A tripwire fire grenade, an item just labeled "pipe," and a bear trap. All datamined in March 2023. All still nothing.

In March 2023, dataminer GabeFollower posted three finds pulled from CS2's game files: a bear trap, a fire grenade nicknamed "Tripwire" that appears to arm itself when a player crosses a wire, and an item with nothing but an empty icon file and the label "pipe", possibly a melee weapon, possibly something closer to the pipe bomb from Left 4 Dead 2. All three were read as Danger Zone additions rather than anything headed for competitive, which tracked, Valve has been consistent about keeping novelty items out of the ranked pool.

That was three and a half years ago. As of this piece, none of the three have shipped, been mentioned in a patch note, or come up in any later official communication. Not deprioritized, not confirmed dead, just silent. The file references presumably still exist somewhere in the build, unused, the same way a huge amount of datamined content sits in any live-service game's files indefinitely.

The reason this is worth revisiting right now: it's the control group for every future leak story, including the M14 piece running alongside this one. When a new datamined weapon shows up and the discourse gets loud, the honest base rate is that most of these never surface again. The bear trap isn't a cautionary tale about a specific leak being wrong, the numbers found were presumably accurate to what existed in the files at the time. It's a reminder that "found in the code" and "coming to the game" are two different claims, and conflating them is how a three-and-a-half-year-old dead end gets mistaken for breaking news.

The panel weighs in

The Ledger: Three years, zero shipped, one hundred percent silence. That's not a rumor anymore, that's a dataset with an n of one and a very boring conclusion.

Dusty: A bear trap in Danger Zone would've actually been funny. Feels about right that the mode everyone stopped talking about also got the weapon everyone stopped talking about.

The Prosecutor: Or Valve built it, tested it internally, and quietly decided it made the mode worse. We're not owed an explanation for every abandoned file, but pretending there isn't one is naive.

Sunshine: I refuse to give up hope on the pipe item. It's been three years. It could still happen. I choose joy.

Worth arguing about: does a leak this old and this dead prove datamined content almost never ships, or is three and a half years nothing in Valve time?

Argue it out in the discussion thread — that's where this actually gets resolved.
